Xiaoyang Galas is a Chinese artist born in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, in 1973, who lives and works in France. After attending the Oil Painting Department of the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, she obtained a master’s degree in Chinese art history and art criticism from the same institution. Since the 1990s, her artistic research has been characterised by a constant striving for harmony between East and West, a cultural and spiritual dialogue that is reflected in her painting, rich in material and symbolic layers.

Xiaoyang Galas’ technique is mixed and personal: she combines acrylic, oil, collage and plant fabrics, creating surfaces that evoke the idea of patchwork, but which in reality represent a poetic balance of heterogeneous elements. In her paintings, the writings — in Chinese, French and English characters — intertwine with the colours and pictorial material, becoming an integral part of the composition. The words, often taken from sacred texts, are a vehicle for the artist to convey a universal message of peace and love. “There is so much darkness and sadness in this world,” says the artist, ‘I no longer want to paint the dark side. I want my art to be a tribute to the beauty of the world, to warm everyone’s heart.

Since the beginning of his career, Xiaoyang Galas has intertwined painting, writing and audiovisual production: between 1995 and 1999, he created and scripted art programmes for Chinese television, which were awarded prizes by the Ministry of Education. During the same period, she painted series inspired by the landscapes of Yunnan and flowers, works collected by galleries in Taiwan and Hong Kong. In 2001, she completed her master’s thesis, The Lost Views, dedicated to the art of the Ming and Qing dynasties, highlighting the link between classical art and psychological thought.

After moving to Europe in the early 2000s, she held numerous solo exhibitions in Switzerland and France, including Through the Villages – From China to Europe (Geneva, 2002), The Echo of Nature (Vevey, 2003) and The Eyes of Paradise (Évian-les-Bains, 2005). She has also exhibited in the United States, the United Kingdom and Austria, receiving awards such as the First Prize of the City of Évian in 2006. Over time, her poetics have evolved towards a more intimate and spiritual dimension, with cycles such as Love Never Ends, Be with You and The Time of Emotions, in which love and hope become keys to understanding the human condition.

Her works have entered prominent public collections, including the Cité du Temps Museum in Geneva, the City of Évian and the CFA Museum in Athens, as well as important private collections throughout Europe, Asia, America and Australia. She was selected in 2021 by Maison & Jardin Magazine and in 2023 she was included in the international catalogue AKOUN – The Rating of Painters 2023–2024. In 2024, her works were chosen from over 9,000 entries for the Women in Art exhibition at the Art Palace in Prague, which celebrates 21 female artists from 16 countries.

For Xiaoyang Galas, “life is a journey with a purpose and art is a game with meaning”. Through her pictorial language, the artist seeks universal harmony, transforming matter and colour into a hymn to beauty and the very essence of life.
